resolutions-ish

I'm kind of late with the resolutions, and I'm a little intimidated by people who actually accomplish theirs, but I'm also inspired and there are certainly many things I'd like to change about my life. I'm not too sure how to actually change anything big, unfortunately, so my current goal is to leave the house every weekend! Maybe I should have started with leaving my room, but I'm aiming high, here. I did manage to leave the house, but I didn't do anything exciting, just grocery shopping and to the mall. I bought this and this (I feel like profgrrrrl now :) I'd never bought anything from there before and I hardly ever buy clothes at all). I'm not sure about the pockets on the second jumper, though. I'm tempted to just cut them off, but I'm worried about making it look worse.
Anyway, now that I've done enough shopping to last quite a few months, what should I do next weekend so that I don't end up staying inside the whole time? There are a few museums I haven't been to yet, but other than that, I can't really think of things to do. What does everyone else do to amuse themselves?
I also managed to cook dinner both yesterday (what the recipe book claimed was pad thai, but was actually just yummy, spicy noodles) and today (what was meant to be potato-based pseudo-risotto, but ended up being potato bake that took almost 4 hours).
Oh, I started a new, hopefully less tortuous, Enriching Activity last week, too. I'm kind of tempted to skip that this week, though, to go to an information session about training to hike in the grand canyon (in return for raising money). I keep getting random charity mailings that don't fit me at all. One began "I'm writing to you because I know you share a dream to hike the appalachian mountain trail". Oh, how I laughed (not that that wouldn't be very cool; I'm just a complete couch potato). I was about to laugh at this one, but they're actually offering to train you properly so it doesn't matter if you're a couch potato to begin with. Of course, I wouldn't actually do it since I can't see myself asking people for money, but I'm still kind of tempted to go along and hear about it.
Well, that wasn't a very coherent post, but I would really like suggestions for things to get me out of the house. What do you do for fun? or what would you like to do?

Amusing myself: Go to the movies, go to museums (definitely!), go to botanical gardens (any in your area?), go to a bookstore like Borders and browse / read / drink coffee (most dangerous because I will certainly spend money on books, etc.), take a walk / exercise (note how low this is on my list, though? *sigh*), go to a pet store and look at all of the animals and maybe buy some stuff for my hamster but mostly look at the animals...

Neat about the Grand Canyon trip. You could set up a pay pal account for donations and the bloggers could help you pay for it!

oh, come on! hammies are cute! everyone should get one. They're soft and nice and low maintenance. It's like having a real life rabbit's foot (like a soft thing to touch), except it's warm and alive and squirmy and cute and you can feed it fruits and vegetables, so get on the Hammie Love Train, people!!

The gardens/walk ideas might have to wait until it warms up a bit (maybe by June I'll be able to stay outside long enough). Thanks for the other ideas, though!
I'm willing to believe you about hamsters' adorableness, but I'm not sure the comparison to a rabbit's foot is the best for making them sound appealing...

I enjoyed having a pet hamster, but, given your line of research, I don't doubt that a pet rodent might not be the most relaxing companion...

hamsters are more pet-like than mice, though. In any case, I have enough trouble taking care of myself; I don't think I can handle the responsibility of a pet.

Is there a nice indoor pool near you? Floating and drifting round in warm water is always fun.

I've been meaning to thank you for the Vigeland Park photo - and you've been there in the flesh? I'm very jealous. Anyway, it was a lovely gesture.

I used to use that SAME reason for not having a pet -- I can't take care of myself -- but I think it's super easy to care for the hammie. I don't know your line of research, though... sounds like mice are involved?

yeah... I sometimes have to do mean things to mice. Apparently, that means I can't be trusted not to abuse any person or animal I come across... (http://doctorfreeride.blogspot.com/2006/01/is-all-animal-research-inhumane.html)
okay, that's not the conclusion, but I still feel bad.

I'm glad you liked the sculpture, Laura. That park was one of my favourite places from that trip. There's also a cool building that the sculptor's brother painted the inside walls of, if you're ever in Oslo.
I don't know if there's a pool I could just float around in, but I could go swim laps. I did that a few times last year so I should try it again; good idea!

Going out every weekend is a very ambitious goal! Gods know I dont' manage it.

When I do, it tends to be haunting book and craft stores. Personally, I think grocery shopping counts.

I'd love to help out iwht more exciting alternatives, but I don't have any, because I don't do any myself. But I am impressed by your resolution.

I think I will be relying heavily on grocery shopping to keep my resolution, but it'd be nice to have some alternatives :)
If I were doing more rewarding things at home, as I'm sure you are, I wouldn't have a problem staying in, though.

Well, thank you. I don't see why scrapbooking is innately more rewarding than anything else, though.... (not that I'm addicted or anything)

well, I was actually thinking of just hanging out with Frances, but scrapbooking is a great idea! I have boxes of unsorted photos I could be dealing with. Perhaps I should change my resolution to just do Something every weekend.
