- piano (keyboards are good, too, but closer to neutral)
- glockenspiel
- cello
- trumpet
- handclaps
Instruments that will make me hate your band a little (unless you're really good):
- bongos
- harmonica
- spoken word
I wish emusic had a "search by instrument" option. I still need recommendations, please!

Okay, I'm laughing that "glockenspiel" is an acceptable instrument but "harmonica" is not. :)
oooh harmonica is just bad.
Glockenspiel is an awesome instrument! How could you compare it to harmonica? Maybe I'm biased because it was my favourite instrument to play in orchestra, too...

I don't know that you'd like my taste in music, however.
I have always been partial to the Hammond B3 organ myself, although most certainly, glockenspiel must be part of the mix of excellent instruments.
And despite the fact that I'm a former trumpet player, I must say that I generally prefer "horn section" to a single trumpet.
Thanks for the suggestions, Shrinky. I haven't listened to much of any of them, so I'll have to try some out.
Horace, a whole horn section would indeed be good, but it's a lot rarer than a trumpet.
Mandolin is also on my list of good instruments, along with every single one of the instruments you've already listed.
