random bullets o' netflix and vegetables

  • I just watched "Me and You and Everyone We Know".
  • I already had Miranda July's book of short stories on my request list at the library, since Jeremy pointed out its excellent website, but the movie made me wish I didn't have to wait for the book.
  • I actually made it to the top of the queue for it while I was home, and thus had to give up my place and go to the back of the line.
  • I think I'm going to cancel my netflix membership, since the housemates sharing it are moving out and I had that DVD for almost 2 months.
  • I probably could've bought the DVD for less.
  • I used to be the kind of customer Netflix hates, though, so it probably all balances out.
  • I think I'm happier not sitting in my room alone long enough to watch all those movies.
  • I joined a farm share thing with some housemates, hoping that would force me to cook real meals and eat more vegetables.
  • Last week, it was my turn to pick up our share and I accidentally brought home twice as much as we were entitled to.
  • This was after checking with a farm person that I had it right, so I don't feel too guilty.
  • Before today, all I'd eaten out of two loads of veges was a leaf of lettuce.
  • Tonight I dumped a bunch of veges in some Trader Joe's sauce, which feels kind of like cheating, especially in comparison to what my housemates have been doing, but let's face it, I wouldn't have cooked anything, otherwise.
  • The veges included some chard, which I'd never eaten before.
  • I'm not sure I will again, either, although the sauce does a good job of disguising the taste.
  • I still have a crisper full of vegetables and another load arriving on Wednesday.
  • I need to learn how to cook more interesting things.
  • Or go to Trader Joe's more often.
  • I totally deserve some Crème Brûlée ice cream for dessert now

I'm not the hugest of vegetable fans, but I like chard cooked for a few minutes in a bit of olive oil, and then some lemon juice or flavored vinegar thrown in at the last minute.

I was actually kind of irritated that they didn't have any chard at farmers' market!

I got a farmer's share with a friend once. We eventually felt like if we got any more chard or kale we would literally DIE. Even though we shared the box, we ended up feeling overwhelmed by all the veggies each week. I am ashamed to admit how much of my half ended up being thrown out. I wish farms that market this way would let you substitute ice cream or mixed berry pie for chard.

Phantom, you must be far more of a vegetable fan than me. I don't think I like any vegetable with that little to disguise it.

Gwen, ice cream or pie would be an excellent substitution! Luckily, I'm splitting the share with 3 others, so I'm hoping I can leave the chard to them, when I don't pick up twice as much by mistake...

ianqui has an interesting recipe for pasta with chard and caramelized onions over at her place (aka blog). That said, I once for food poisoning from some kale (which I also disliked, making the food poisoning even more horrible), and thus refuse to eat anything like that ever again.

I'm back on my fried rice kick - which would be easy to do with whatever veggies you have lying around. This time I used brown basmati rice (had ever had *brwn* basmati rice before - just as yummy) from trader joe's. I actually bought a huge bag of frozen veggies, brown rice, and tofu from there, and only spent $16.00. I love TJs.

A store near me is apparently going to buy a few shares of a farmer's share, and then let people pick and choose what they want.

The thunder and lightning tonight is particularly ominous ...do you think voldemort's here? I'm scared.

Yeeeeah. Chard vs. ice cream? Hardly a tough call. :)
