ice skating

I just noticed that the gym is running a 4-lesson ice skating class for $20. Ice skating always sounds like fun, but it hasn't been so great in practice because I suck. I can stay upright, but I don't actually go anywhere. Last time I went (several years ago), my friend would do about 10 laps for every one of mine, even though she'd stop and chat as she passed me each time. I also sucked at cross-country skiing for the same reason: I can't bring myself to take one foot off the ice/snow, in case I fall over.

So, I think a class would be good, the only problem is I would have to provide my own skates. At first I thought that would be too much, since I probably won't skate much, but then I saw that Target has skates for $30. Of course, as I kept looking, I started thinking maybe I should get more comfortable ones, since the stiff ones I've hired at rinks before have always made my feet hurt. It wouldn't be that much more... Except, the class starts on Monday, so I'd probably have to pay extra for faster shipping and I don't even know if they'd fit. And I can't find anywhere that sells ice skates in this city so I could try them on or not have to pay shipping (there must be places, but they don't have a great online presence and I went to Sports Chain today and they pointed me to a rack containing two styles of men's hockey skates and one of kids' skates when I asked). I'll probably miss one of the four lessons, too.

So now I'm thinking it's probably ridiculous to spend $60 on ice skates when I've barely skated before and don't have anyone to go with in future, so I probably won't use them that much. But, I was all excited about the idea... I was thinking it could be a good reward for getting my star every day this month, since I haven't managed to come up with a reward so far. So, what do you think? Anyone have any ideas for finding cheap ice skates? Should I sign up anyway?

long, long, long ago I was a competitive figure skater. It was lots of fun!

You might want to check with your school's recreation people, they may have skates you can check out.

I'm assuming the lessons will be at an indoor rink (as they start next week), you might want to call them to ask about skate rentals. Most places that have open ice time also rent skates.

Psycgirl, thanks for the encouragement :)

ItPF, it's at the school's rink and they don't ever have skates to hire, unfortunately. I may have a couple of new leads, though.

Used ice skates are usually possible. I got mine at a Play It Again Sports. There are a few in our area; Google for the site and then you can search locations by ZIP code.
