instant chocolate cake reviews

I tried this 5-minute chocolate cake recipe a while ago and it was okay, but not chocolatey enough. It was pretty much exactly the same as the chocolate cake recipe that most of my family inexplicably loved and requested for their birthdays growing up, but that always disappointed me, too.

Several weeks ago, I was feeling cavalier with my personal information and signed up for a bunch of free samples. My free instant molten chocolate cake arrived today and it was very yummy. I'm almost certainly not going to ever buy it, though, so I started wondering if there's a way to recreate it from real ingredients.

Apparently, it's just a single serving of regular cake mix, which would be cheaper, but still wouldn't allow me to make it whenever I feel like chocolate cake. So what is in the mix that makes it properly chocolatey?

I wonder it it's a measure of bicarb soda which is an ingredient in Dutch chocolate and Devil's Food cake. It's where the redness comes from. Something to do with alkalines and acids...

What about making the five-minute cake but adding in a whole lot of chopped up chocolate (plus extra cocoa)? It might not set as much, but gooey is better, right?

Okay, so I just made it using 3 TB flour, 4 TB cocoa, and a couple of squares of chocolate chopped in. I also only cooked it for 2 minutes, not three. It was pretty good, and still a bit gooey on top, which was kind of like a sauce. But the bits that cooked properly were a weird spongy texture, so I can see why you weren't too impressed with the original recipe.

There is supposed to be a homemade chocolate cake recipie that includes cake mix, chocolate chips etc.. all stuff you could keep in your desk at work. The idea is that you just add water, microwave it, and you have a treat...

They were talking about it on the radio a while back, so I don't have a link -- but, it must be out there.

Thanks, Kirsty. I might have to experiment. :)

Thanks for field testing that, Styley! I was thinking that chocolate chips would definitely help it, but I guess not enough.

ItPF, I found a recipe for a single serving cake from mix with chocolate sauce that's probably similar. I guess I could just buy a box of cake mix and have it last for a while.
